Suit Up: What Men Should Wear for Headshots

Getting ready for a headshot session can feel a bit intimidating, especially when it comes to picking out the perfect outfit. For guys, striking the right balance between classic style and personal comfort is the key. Whether you’re aiming for a sharp, professional look or a more relaxed vibe, your clothing choices can make all the difference.

In this guide will walk you through 9 tips for selecting suits, shirts, ties, and accessories that will ensure you look your best in front of our camera. From suit selection to final checks, here’s everything you need to know to nail your headshot wardrobe:

1. Suit Selection

Choose a well-fitted suit in a classic dark color like navy blue, charcoal gray, or black. These colors project professionalism and won’t distract from your face. Make sure the suit fits well, with no bunching when you button it or sit down. Tailoring is key – a perfectly fitted suit can make a world of difference. Will you be traveling? 2. Shirts and Ties

Pair your suit with a dress shirt that complements the suit. White or light blue shirts are safe bets. If you prefer a bit more color, go for solid colors or subtle patterns. Your tie should match both the suit and shirt, ideally in a shade between the two. Avoid overly shiny silk ties and choose one with a matte finish to avoid reflections in your photos.

3. Avoid Bold Patterns

Stay away from bold, distracting patterns or colors. Small grids or tight herringbone patterns can create a moiré effect on camera, making the pattern look distorted. Thin stripes are generally fine, but keep them subtle.

4. Without a Tie

If you choose not to wear a tie, pick a non-white shirt to avoid losing detail in the photo. A darker color shirt or one with subtle details (like pockets) can some flare. Unbuttoning the top one or two buttons gives you a relaxed yet professional look. But keep your undershirt invisible – a V-neck or no undershirt at all is best.

5. Layering Options

Consider bringing a jacket or sweater to add layers to your look. This can create depth and offer more options during the shoot. Even if you don’t plan to wear it in every shot, it’s good to have it as an option.

6. Accessories

Keep accessories minimal and classic. A simple (non-smart) watch, cuff links, or a pocket square can add a touch of personality without being distracting. Avoid anything too flashy or trendy that might date the photo. A Fitbit or Apple Watch may be part of your everyday attire, but in 10 years, you’ll wish you had removed it.

7. Fit and Comfort

Comfort is key. Make sure your clothing not only fits well, but also feels comfortable. This will help you look more relaxed and confident. And be sure to stay away from anything that’s too tight or too loose. If it’s been awhile since you tried buttoning your jacket, be sure to check it before packing it for your shoot.

8. Footwear

While your shoes might not be the focus of a headshot, wearing polished, appropriate footwear can help you feel more put-together. Stick to classic dress shoes in black or brown that match your outfit. You can ignore this if we’re not doing a full-length portrait.

9. Final Checks

Before the shoot, give your outfit a final once-over. Make sure there are no stains, wrinkles, or missing buttons. Use a lint roller to remove any dust or “pet glitter” aka hair, and ensure your collar and cuffs are crisp and clean.
