Snapshot Style: Dressing for Women’s Headshots
Ready to rock your headshot? We’ve got you covered with some tips and tricks to make sure you look your best. Whether you’re aiming for a killer LinkedIn profile pic or just want to update your professional image, choosing the right outfit is key.
Here are some easy pointers to help you nail that perfect look. Let’s get you photo-ready.
1. Outfit Choice
Select a suit or business outfit with a classic look that won’t easily date the photo. We like to say this will be your favorite photo in 10 years, but that will only be the case if you plan ahead. Neutral tones such as black, navy, and gray are always safe choices, but you can also opt for jewel tones like deep blue, emerald green, or burgundy for a bit of color. Ensure your outfit is well-fitted and tailored to complement your body shape.
2. Problem Patterns
Steer clear of bold, distracting patterns. Small herringbone patterns or tight grids can wreak havoc on our cameras, making the pattern look distorted. Thin stripes or subtle patterns can work well, but keep them understated to maintain a professional look.
3. Top Tips
Avoid stark white unless it’s under a jacket, cardigan, or sweater, as it can wash out in photos. V-necks are generally flattering as they elongate the neckline, but make sure the neckline isn’t too low to avoid showing cleavage. Avoid high turtlenecks, which can make you appear like you have no neck.
4. Let’s Talk Sleeves
This is more of a suggestion, but long sleeves generally look best for professional headshots. If you prefer short sleeves or a sleeveless top, consider bringing a blazer or sweater to provide layering options. This can help create a more polished look and offer variety during the shoot. Bare arms can sometimes detract from a professional appearance, so having a layering option is beneficial.
5. Bling
Opt for small, classic pieces that aren’t too reflective or flashy. Earrings should be simple and should not dangle more than an inch from your earlobe. If your jewelry draws more attention than your face, it’s best to remove it. Necklaces and bracelets should also be understated to keep the focus on your face. Otherwise, it becomes a jewelry ad, rather than a headshot.
6. Other Accessories
Scarves, subtle necklaces, or a simple brooch can add a touch of personality without being distracting. Ensure accessories complement your outfit and don’t clash with your overall vibe. Avoid overly large or bright accessories that might outshine you.
7. Fit and Comfort
Ensure your clothing fits well and is comfortable. Tight clothing can create unflattering bulges, while loose clothing can look sloppy. Aim for a tailored fit that complements your body shape. Being comfortable in your outfit will help you appear more relaxed and confident in your photos.
8. Layers, Layers, Layers
Bring a few different layers, such as blazers, cardigans, or scarves. This will allow you to switch up your look easily during the shoot and add depth and interest to your photos. Layering can also help you adjust to different backgrounds and lighting setups during the session.
8. Footwear
If we aren’t planning on doing a full-length portrait, you can ignore this. While your shoes might not be the focus of a headshot, wearing polished, appropriate footwear can help you feel more put-together. Stick to classic dress shoes or simple heels that match your outfit. Avoid overly trendy or casual shoes.
9. Makeup
The goal of a headshot is for it to look like you, so keep your makeup looking natural. Apply makeup as you would for an everyday look, or slightly enhanced for going to a swanky dinner. Avoid Heavy Makeup. Skip heavy foundation and shiny products. Light to medium shades work best. Lightly accentuate features without overdoing it. Retouching can handle blemishes and minor imperfections. Everyone gets the 10-years younger edits, so don’t go overboard.
10. Final Checks
Before the shoot, give your outfit a final once-over. Make sure there are no stains, wrinkles, or missing buttons. Use a lint roller to remove any dust or hair, and ensure your collar and cuffs are crisp and clean.
