How to Prepare for Your Headshot Session

Headshot Hype: How to Get Ready for Your Close-Up

We want you to get the most out of your headshot session with us. Over the years, we’ve photographed hundreds and hundreds of people. During that time, a few things have stood out to help our clients prepare.

These 7 tips can help you look and feel your best for your upcoming portrait session with us:

1. Skin and Health

  • Hydrate Like it’s Your Job: Drink plenty of water in the days leading up to your session. Hydrated skin looks more filled in and youthful, reducing the appearance of fine lines and under-eye circles. You’ll thank us later.
  • Alcohol and Smoking are a No-No: Alcohol dehydrates your skin and causes puffiness, a one-two punch for a headshot. Smoking can dull your complexion, also making you look older. Avoid both for a few days before your shoot.
  • Sleep is Your Friend: Aim for a good night’s sleep before your session. Rested eyes and skin can make a significant difference in how refreshed you look.
  • Skin Care Routine: Stick to your usual skincare routine and avoid trying new products right before the shoot to prevent any unexpected reactions. This isn’t he time to try that new TikTok challenge for younger looking skin.

2. Hair

  • Timing Your Haircut: Don’t cut your hair right before the shoot. For men, it’s best to get a haircut about 1–2 weeks before to allow it to settle. Women should avoid drastic changes in style or color right before the session.
  • Color Considerations: Freshly colored hair, especially with red tones, can appear too vibrant on camera. If you color your hair, do it at least 1–2 weeks prior to our shoot to get a natural look.
  • Styling: On the day of the shoot, style your hair as you usually would. Avoid heavy products that can make your hair look greasy or stiff.

3. Teeth

  • Whitening: If you choose to whiten your teeth, start the process well in advance. Use natural whitening methods or consult your dentist for professional whitening.
  • Quick Fix: For a quick touch-up, you can mix toothpaste with baking soda and a bit of hydrogen peroxide to polish your teeth. Use this method sparingly as it can be abrasive. But keep in mind, we whiten everyone’s teeth in Photoshop, so don’t make your teeth sensitive just for this.

4. Beards and Facial Hair

  • Tame the Beast: If you have a beard, ensure it is neatly trimmed and evenly groomed. A well-maintained beard looks polished and professional. Beard brushes and combs are your friend.
  • Shaving: If you prefer a clean-shaven look, shave on the morning of the shoot to avoid a five o’clock shadow. Use a good quality razor and aftershave to prevent irritation.

5. Makeup and Skincare

  • Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate your skin a day before the shoot to remove dead skin cells and create a smooth canvas for makeup.
  • Moisturize: Apply a good moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated and glowing.
  • Avoid New Products: Stick to products you know work well for your skin to avoid any last-minute breakouts or reactions.

6. Clothing Preparation

  • Try Everything On: Try on your chosen outfits a few days before to make sure they still fit right and are comfortable. The further in advance you do this, the more opportunity you have to make any adjustments or find replacements.
  • So Fresh and So Clean: Ensure your clothing is clean and wrinkle-free. Iron your clothes the night before and hang them up to keep them crispy.

7. Relaxation and Mental Preparation

  • Keep Calm and Carry On: Take some time to relax and mentally prepare for your session. Practice deep breathing or light stretching to ease any tension.
  • A Positive Mindset Brings Positive Things: Approach the session with a positive mindset. Confidence will shine through in your photos.
